A week with the iPad

It’s been a week since I got my iPad and so far, I’m very impressed!  I’m not disappointed at all in my purchase.

I keep reading postings on the net from the Apple haters complaining about what it lacks and what Android is going to have.  I think they’re going to be waiting for a long time…  I’d rather have an iPad now, than wait a year for the mythical Android device to show up that works as well.  By then, the iPad will be so far ahead in apps and support, there won’t be any catching up.

Where's my iPad?

This has been a most stressful day.  Every morning this week has produced strange dreams of using iPad like devices.  But today is the day!  It’s supposed to show up!

I’ve been watching the Fedex site since Monday.  It started out in China, made its way to Alaska, then went right past me to Mississauga, Ontario.  There it sat for day, then finally started on its way back to Calgary.

iPad vs HP Slate

This is a blog post I meant to get out long ago.  In fact, the day before I found out the HP Slate was being cancelled.  I thought I’d post it anyway because it explains some of my reasons for wanting the iPad.

I’ve been trying to decide on which tablet I want to get in a couple months.  I think I’m leaning towards the iPad even though I was pretty sure I wanted the better flexibility of the HP Slate.

The first things that come to mind are all the things that the iPad is missing.  The most commonly complained about items are Flash, USB, SD card slot, and camera(s).  Let’s discuss these items one by one.

My Last Server Is Now On Ubuntu

So, my last server has now been converted over to Ubuntu.  I wasn’t originally planning to convert this server but I thought it was kind of strange to have one Windows box still sitting around.

This machine was actually sitting in my living room and was connected to the TV because it had an HDMI output on it.  I kept all my media files on it.  I wasn’t actually using anything other than BSPlayer to play the stuff though.

Time for the annual Linux attempt

Well, it’s time for me to do my annual Linux install attempt.  Well, I don’t know if it’s actually annual since the month varies quite a bit.

Last year’s attempt didn’t go very far. I made the major mistake of trying to put Linux on my desktop PC.  It worked okay enough to run VMWare so that I could run my XP machine to connect to work.  But, working with KDE or even Gnome on a regular basis was frustrating.  X-Windows just doesn’t handle multiple monitors anywhere near as good as MS Windows does.

So, this time I’m going to focus on the servers.  They don’t need graphical interfaces, or at least if they have one, it will not need to do much. And there is no way in hell I’m giving up Windows 7 on my workstation!

I’ll keep updating this blog entry over the weekend as things progress.  Worst case, I may be back on Windows 2008 R2 on all the boxes (let’s hope not).
